Jack Kirby

This Tuesday I had the chance to visit the Jack Kirby Exhibit on CSUN campus. I was very intrigued and fascinated by his work. Kirby was a very talented man and it shows in his artwork. While at the exhibit I came across many pieces that I enjoyed looking at, one in particular caught my attention, which was this cover of the comic, Captain America, ‘Madbomb’.

In the comic Captain America and Falcon have been able to find this Madbomb that suppose to set off in New York which the scientist, Mason Harding had created for the Royalists Forces of America.

This cover relates to my blog because as I have stated before,  comic books were used as propaganda for the war. In the cover we can see how strong and heroic Captain America appears. He looks invincible and as though nothing can harm him which can lead  people who read these comics get hyped up and also would want to feel as a superhero and decide to join the war.

By using Molly Bang's book to help analyze the cover we can see that the main focus is on Captain America because he is right in the center and is the largest person. The way his body becomes larger gives him the effect as if he was approaching the reader. Being drawn this way gives him the illusion of movement. By looking at Captain America's facial expression we can conclude that he is very serious just by seeing how he is grinding his teeth. His strong and sharp jaw line gives him a scary aspect. We can also tell that his shield is also very important because it is almost half his size. In the background we have Falcon and a mob of angry people. We can tell that they are angry by seeing that they are all holding some sort of weapon aiming at Captain America and Falcon.
