Superheroes Becoming More Diverse

Hello guys, it’s Claudia again and today I will be reviewing this article by Jessie J. Holland published in The Associated Press.  Her article discusses how comic book  will now be more diverse when it comes to their superheroes.  One of the main superhero that has been made as black is Captain America which has made a huge impact on people outside this world of comics.  One example is of the Michael Brown shooting, who was only 18 when he was killed by a police officer. At his funeral unauthorized images of Captain America had been showed where, “Captain America had his hands up saying "Don't Shoot," a slogan protesters have used to highlight the number of African Americans killed by police” (Holland, The Associated Press).  Dc comics along with Marvel comics will also be bringing more diversity to their superheroes such as having an alterative black Superman.  But not everybody is happy about these changes states Holland.

I really enjoyed reading Holland’s article about how superheroes will finally be multicolored and bring more diversity in the future.  In The Associated Press Holland said, “Mainstream comic book superheroes — America's modern mythology — have been redrawn from the stereotypical brown-haired, blue-eyed white male into a world of multicolored, multireligious and multigendered crusaders to reflect a greater diversity in their audience.” I really liked how she brought out her point that these superheroes will finally reflect their audience and if superheroes are more diverse they can become more relatable to people from different backgrounds.  In her article Holland quotes Noah Berlasky, an author of “Wonder Woman” where Berlasky says, “Changing people's race or changing people's gender can feel more threatening or a bigger deal than changing Thor into a frog.” I would have to agree with his statement about how it is such a big deal to be changing these superheroes gender or race especially since they have been a certain way for many years but on the other hand we do now live in a world where times have changed where there is more equality between one another.
